Avon is a bit difficult to deal with however he is able to curb his usual sarcasm and snark to be a good steward of the woman.

One of the things that I really liked about this book was the way Heyer contrasted Leonie's boyish habits with Avon's cool, organized and reserve. Her physical reactions that are impulsive and blood-thirstiness are in stark contrast to his calm, composed manner. I also appreciated how he managed to defeat the villain without threatening him or chasing him. Instead, he used insinuation.

Heyer subtilly emphasized the limitations women face in this time. Leonie isn't happy trading in her breeches for layers of petticoats and skirts, she refuses to ride side-saddle, and is always shooting dead villains (even even though it's a risky job). avon book November is initially uncomfortable with her rebellious behaviour, but he soon comes to love her.

I did find it difficult to remember who was who in the beginning, because Heyer refers to the Duke by several different names in the initial pages. Once you have figured it out the book becomes more comprehensible. This was a wonderful book that I highly recommend it!
