In 1941, the American News Company (ANC) established Avon Publications as a paperback book publisher. It was initially focused on comics, but then changed to include a range of genres, including romance.

In the beginning of publishing on paperbacks, Avon Books was a major rival to the more literary Pocket Book company. Avon was a mass-market company and published westerns, mystery books and romances with attractive covers.
