How to replace Window pane Window Panes

Glass

This will prevent the new putty from taking up moisture and drying out and cracking over time. Apply this coat using a brush or the edge of your putty knife, and then employ the chisel or back end of the knife to gently hammer in the new sash and glazier's points into the rabbet grooves. Repeat this process every 10 inches around the perimeter of the frame.

Putty

A baseball hit or a rock thrown by error, or a tree falling could result in a broken or cracked window. Most windows can be replaced easily by installing a new piece. The glass is held in position by a small metal clip, referred to as the glazier's point, and putty. This compound is also known as glazing compound. Remove the old pane and clean the area using a rag, a scraper that is a pull type or a wood chisel. Wear safety glasses and gloves while doing this work. It is essential that the glass rests against the putty on both sides, so if you need to, lightly tap the glass into the rabbet with your thumb.

If the new pane is cracked, you can cover it with a solvent-based glue or silicone caulk prior pressing it into the sash. If not, you'll have to apply putty over the crack to create an impervious seal to keep water out. Once the putty is dry remove the oily film off of the glass and let it dry completely before painting. If you paint before the putty has completely dry, it won't form a solid seal and could be leaking or discoloring over time.

Paint

You might be worried about replacing a broken pane of glass. It's true that replacing a single pane glass doesn't need to be costly if you do it on your own. In fact windows with double panes can be replaced for a fraction of the cost of a professional.

If you are working with a large glass window first ensure it is securely fixed to the frame. This job is relatively easy and quick with the proper tools and techniques.

Once you're ready to begin, begin by removing the old window pane by removing the metal glazing points that are connected to it. They are basically tiny metal triangles that act as "nails" that keep the window in in the wood frame. They are buried beneath a layer of glazing putty, which hardens into a solid, molded wedge which holds the window in place and hides the edges.

After you have the old pane taken away, clean up the surrounding frame and wood. Scrape away any old paint and sand down the rabbet grooves, where the glazing points used to be.
